1/5/08 -- Junior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) had a career-high 21 points and also 11 rebounds for Widener, which withstood a furious comeback by Arcadia for a 72-63 victory at Schwartz Center.
Widener (11-1) appeared to have things in hand by scoring 11 straight points over 2 1/2 minutes for a 55-36 lead with 9:13 left. Junior Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) netted eight points in that span.
Junior Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) nailed a 3-pointer to give the Pride a 61-47 cushion with 3:54 left. But the Knights (3-6) went on a 14-4 run to move to 65-61 with 1:04 remaining, keyed by nine points from Blaise Pepitone.
Miller helped Widener regain its poise, hitting a layup with 35 seconds to go and adding a free throw two seconds later for a 68-61 margin. Sosna shot 4-for-4 from the line over the final 23 seconds to help the Pride secure their third straight win.
Sosna notched his second double-double of the season by shooting 7-of-10 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the line over 27 minutes. Jones matched his season high with 21 points and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Miller poured in 13 points for the Pride, who shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the field and owned a 41-36 rebounding edge.
Pepitone scored 17 points and Eric Elliott had 15 and seven rebounds for the Knights, who shot 38 percent (26-of-68) but were 3-of-20 from 3-point range.
Widener continues its six-game homestand Tuesday against Neumann, beginning at 7:00 pm.
