Men's Basketball Handed 78-63 Setback at Lebanon Valley

1/30/08 -- Widener ran into the tenacious play of Lebanon Valley and could not overcome a rough first-half for a 78-63 Commonwealth Conference loss in Annville, PA.

The Flying Dutchmen (7-11, 1-2 CC) went on a 16-4 run to open a 39-16 lead with 4:14 left in the first half. Peter Ruth and Dan Dunkelberger netted four points apiece.

LVC owned a 42-30 lead at the break by shooting 49 percent (18-of-37) from the floor and holding Widener to 33 percent (12-of-36).

The Flying Dutchmen's play in the paint was the story. The team shot 57 percent (27-of-47) from two-point range and owned a 51-32 rebounding edge.

Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) scored 14 points and fellow junior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) added 11 and seven rebounds for Widener, which shot 33 percent (24-of-72) overall.

Ruth came off the bench to have 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting with eight rebounds. Kyle Enoch had 14 points and eight rebounds with Dunkelberger contributing 13 and 10 for LVC.

Widener is home Saturday against Messiah as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The women's game begins at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.

The Pride on Saturday will participate in the nation's effort to raise money for Coaches vs. Cancer. The squad's coaches will show their support by wearing sneakers. The admission as well as any additional donations will go to help fight this cause.
