(boxscore)

1/17/08 -- Widener held off a determined Valley Forge Christian squad to notch its sixth straight win, 79-71 at Schwartz Center.

Justyn Mitchell nailed a 3-pointer to bring the Patriots within 72-67 with 2:22 left. But junior Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) stepped up big with two free throws, giving the Pride a 74-67 lead with 54 seconds to play.

Nate Stoner drilled a 3-pointer as VFC closed to 74-70 with 46 seconds to go, but two free throws from sophomore Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) with 40 seconds remaining made it a six-point contest to all but ice it.

Jones scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and shot 8-of-10 from the line. Junior Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) netted 13 points and sophomore Jamarr Johnson (Pittsgrove, NJ) added 10 and six rebounds for Widener (14-1), which shot 40 percent (29-of-72) from the floor.

Stoner poured in 24 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for the Patriots (13-7), who shot 48 percent (24-of-50) but could not overcome 29 turnovers. Stephen Pierantozzi scored 18 points and Mitchell added 15.

Widener opens Commonwealth Conference play Tuesday at home against Albright as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The women's game starts at 6:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 8:00 pm.
