Women's Soccer Sees Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak End With 2-1 Loss to Arcadia

(boxscore)

9/22/07 -- Widener gave up two goals in the final 10 minutes and had its seven-game unbeaten streak halted with a gutwrenching 2-1 loss to Arcadia at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

The Knights (6-2-1) knotted the score, 1-1, in the 81st minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) mishandled a ball in front and Stephanie Bates was right there to knock it home.

With momentum on its side, Arcadia took the lead two minutes later. Janelle Jablonski fed a pass to Samantha Calhoun who lofted a 30-yard shot over Gunter's head and in.

The loss spoiled a solid night for Gunter, who ended with six saves and again played great for the Pride (6-2-1).

Sophomore Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) in the 76th minute netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season, giving Widener a 1-0 lead. Senior Sam Hand (Millville, NJ) lofted a cross from the right side and Baer booted it in from 10 yards.

Widener owned a 15-11 shots edge, including 8-2 in the opening half when the game remained scoreless.

Michelle Leone made seven saves and Calhoun took six shots for Arcadia.

Widener continues its nine-game homestand Wednesday against FDU-Florham, beginning at 7:00 pm.
