12/7/07 -- Widener ran into a red-hot shooting team in Penn State Brandywine and was dealt its first loss of the season, 74-73 in Glassboro, NJ.
The loss sends Widener (8-1) to the consolation game of the Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic on Saturday against Valley Forge Christian. Tip-off is at 1:00 pm.
Junior Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) made two free throws with 1:40 left to bring the Pride within 72-71. Widener got the ball back 10 seconds later after Jamil Nelson committed an offensive foul.
Jones again was called on, but missed a 3-pointer. Freshman Clinton Cole (Upper Darby, PA) grabbed the offensive rebound, but junior Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) missed a 3-pointer and Nelson hauled in the carom.
Mike Thornton's layup with 57 seconds remaining gave Penn State Brandywine a 74-71 cushion.
Widener would not go away as Jones made a layup and was fouled with 45 seconds to play. But he missed the free throw and Thomas Ostien got the rebound for Penn State Brandywine.
Thornton missed a 3-pointer as the shot clock was running down and the Pride had one more chance, but Jones could not hit a jumper in the closing seconds.
Jones scored 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, Miller netted 12 and junior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) added nine and 10 rebounds for the Pride, who shot 37 percent (25-of-68) from the field.
Thornton had 29 points and 10 rebounds with Nelson contributing 11 and 10 for PSU, which shot 59 percent (13-of-22) in the second half and 50 percent (26-of-52) overall.
