Women's Soccer Headed to Commonwealth Conference Tournament with 2-0 Victory Over Albright

(boxscore)

10/27/07 -- Sophomore Sarah Schaffer (Deptford, NJ) and freshman Caryinna Yenchak (Ashley, PA) scored for Widener, which ended the regular season with a 2-0 Commonwealth Conference victory at Albright in Reading, PA.

Widener (14-4-1, 3-2 CC) is headed to the conference tournament as the third seed and for the second year in a row will visit No. 2 seed Elizabethtown. The match on Tuesday begins at 6:00 pm.

The winner advances to the final on Saturday to face either Messiah or Lebanon Valley for the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

This marks the first time the Pride advanced to a conference tournament in consecutive years since the squad played in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament three straight seasons (1995-97).

Schaffer gave Widener a 1-0 in the 54th minute. She took a throw in from Yenchak and found the back of the net for her first goal of the year.

Yenchak netted her eighth goal of the season in the 86th minute off a feed from sophomore Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA). It was Baer's conference-leading 12th assist and 42nd point.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) made it stand with three saves. Senior Sam Hand (Millville, NJ) had three shots to help the Pride end with a 9-6 edge.

Jess Schmura made four saves for Albright (8-10-1, 1-4).
