First-Half Goals from Kim Sharpless and Sam Baer Lift Women’s Soccer to Critical 2-1 Victory Over Lebanon Valley

(boxscore)

10/24/07 – Sophomores Kim Sharpless (Millville, NJ) and Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) scored first-half goals for Widener, which took a major step toward making the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Lebanon Valley at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Sharpless scored in the sixth minute to give Widener a 1-0 lead. She took advantage of a giveaway by the Dutchmen's defense and fired home a 15-yard shot inside the left post for her sixth goal of the season.

Baer netted her team-leading 15th goal in the 31st minute as the Pride gained a 2-0 lead. Sharpless fed a pass in front which was tipped by freshman Caryinna Yenchak (Ashley, PA) over to Baer, who put a 10-yard shot inside the left post.

Widener (13-4-1, 2-2 CC) in the first half dominated with a 7-0 shots advantage, en route to a 9-2 mark overall.

Lebanon Valley (9-7-1, 1-3) closed to 2-1 in the 49th minute when Emily Bainbridge scored on a 20-yard free kick.

But the Pride held on from there for their seventh victory in nine outings. Widener has a half-game lead over Albright and a one-game lead over Lebanon Valley for third place in the conference.

Baer ended with four shots as Widener finished with a 9-2 edge. Sophomore Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) needed just one save.

Erika Ely ended with two saves for the Dutchmen.

Widener closes the regular season Saturday at Albright in Reading, PA. Game time is 6:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 8:00 pm.
