Mike Falkenstein's 11 Catches Help Football Remain Undefeated in MAC With 23-3 Victory at FDU-Florham

(boxscore)

10/19/07 -- Senior Mike Falkenstein (Newark, DE) had a career-high 11 catches for 177 yards and a touchdown as Widener won its fourth straight game, a 23-3 Middle Atlantic Conference victory at FDU-Florham in Madison, NJ.

Falkenstein's big day was highlighted by his 21-yard touchdown catch from senior Matt Campbell (Broomall, PA) that gave Widener a 10-3 lead with 7:08 left in the second quarter. The Pride (5-2, 4-0 MAC) were faced with third down and 13 when Campbell lofted a pass and Falkenstein hauled it in near the back of the end zone.

That drive was kept alive when senior tight end Tim Kilkenny (Doylestown, PA) hauled in a 15-yard pass to the Devils 33 yard line on third and eight.

Widener pushed its lead to 13-3 on a 33-yard field goal from senior Tom Laurich (Warminster, PA) with 28 seconds left in the first half. That capped a 30-minute span in which the Pride amassed 209 yards of offense and posted 10 first downs.

The Pride really took control in the second half, scoring points on their first two possessions. The first drive saw Falkenstein catch two passes for 25 yards, setting up Laurich's 22-yard field goal with 12:09 to play in the third quarter for a 16-3 margin.

Widener's defense forced FDU into a three and out before getting the ball back on a short punt. Falkenstein had a big 15-yard catch for a first down and the visitors benefited from a pass interference penalty that put the ball at the Devils 14 yard line.

Andrew Payton (Folsom, PA) had a 13-yard carry and fellow sophomore Ian Decker (Phillipsburg, NJ) followed with a one-yard dive for the touchdown and a 23-3 lead with 7:43 remaining in the third.

Falkenstein's receptions are the most for Widener since Jeff Chick had 12 at Lebanon Valley on September 24, 2005. The receiving yards are the highest since running back Khalee Prothro had 180 against Moravian on October 1, 2005.

Campbell completed 20-of-34 passes for 267 yards. Payton ended with 11 carries for 43 yards and Decker closed with eight catches for 40 yards.

Freshman Joe Favinger (Mohnton, PA) continued his strong play with 10 tackles and senior Robert McHugh (Philadelphia, PA) ended with a 40.3 yard punting average, including a 54-yard boot.

The Pride, who have won 10 straight against the Devils, finished with a 350-241 edge in total offense that included 267-166 in passing yards. The squad had an average starting field position at its own 44 yard line in the second half with FDU (2-5, 0-4) beginning on average at its own 17.

Bill Winters completed 23-of-40 passes for 166 yards for the Devils.

Mike Barnhard opened the scoring for FDU with a 20-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter for a 3-0 lead. Laurich booted the first of his three field goals two minutes later, a 26-yard kick, for a 3-3 contest.

Widener next Friday hosts Delaware Valley in the Keystone Cup Game at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
