10/16/07 -- Widener played a strong defensive game against second-ranked Messiah before suffering a 1-0 Commonwealth Conference loss at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
The Pride (12-3-1, 1-1 CC) did what they had to do against the national power. The squad kept themselves in the game despite a 9-0 shot disadvantage in the opening half.
But Messiah (14-0, 2-0) came through in the 54th minute. Rachel Horning got a boot on a 15-yard shot which sailed over sophomore goalkeeper Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) and inside the left post.
Avie Fitzgerald and Erin Hench ended with four shots apiece for the Falcons, who closed with 24 overall.
Gunter finished with eight saves for the Pride.
Widener hits the road Saturday to visit No. 18 Elizabethtown in a re-match of last year's conference semifinals. The Pride look to avenge the loss in a match which begins at 2:00 pm.
