CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Field Hockey couldn't grab a win in the 2026 season opener as they fell to the Elizabethtown Blue Jays by a final score of 2-1 at Edith R. Dixon Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a slow start for both teams offensively in the first period, the scoring opened up in the second period. Pinelli recorded the first goal from point blank range just a little over two minutes into the quarter. The Blue Jays answered quickly, tying the game up just 47 seconds later. The game would be tied at one going into halftime despite each team taking seven shots in the frame.

Elizabethtown took control in the second half, scoring a goal with 10:46 left in the third period. Widener had a chance to tie the game up just two minutes later when Brie Mallozzi stepped up to take a penalty stroke. However, her shot was saved and the score would remain 2-1. Widener put two shots on goal in the final frame but couldn't find the equalizer and the game would finish 2-1 in favor of the Blue Jays.

The Pride will hit the road and travel north to face the Stevens Ducks in Hoboken, N.J. on Saturday, September 5. The game is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
