CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener Baseball offense exploded for 14 runs in their win against the Penn State berks Nittany lions.
The Pride are now 14-12 on the season and 8-4 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kevin Bukowski anchored the Widener offense, going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a massive three-run home run, a sacrifice fly, four total RBIs, and two runs scored.
- Brendan Raven capitalized on his opportunities, going 1-for-1 with a double, a hit-by-pitch, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
- Sam Benedetti provided a massive spark, going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.
- Myles Calderbank contributed heavily from the middle of the lineup, recording two hits, including a double, to go along with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored.
- Ryan Bauerle was excellent in the lead off spot, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base and two runs scored
- Mark Selverian had a solid day, going 1-3 with a double which was his first career hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride came out firing in the bottom of the first to take a quick 4-0 lead. After Kevin Bukowski and Ryan Bauerle sparked the offense with back-to-back singles, Brendan Raven cleared the bases with a two-run double to deep left-center. Myles Calderbank kept the rally alive with an RBI single to right-center, and Sean Burke put the finishing touch on the four-run inning by driving an RBI double down the right-field line. The Pride didn't let up in the second, exploding for five more runs to build a commanding 9-0 cushion. The rally began with consecutive singles from Bauerle and Brandon Yoder, setting the stage for Kevin Bukowski, who launched a three-run blast to left-center. Sean Burke kept the line moving with an RBI walk before Bobby Doherty forced a costly Nittany Lion mistake to cap the scoring for the inning. Widener's offense showed no signs of slowing down in the third, extending the lead to 11-0. After Benedetti singled and Mark Selverian launched a double, Bukowski picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly. Chris McKenna capped the scoring for the frame, putting the ball in play to drive in the Pride's second run of the inning. The pride would add on one in the fourth, capitalizing on Penn State Berks mistakes to take a 12-0 lead.
- The Nittany Lions got on the board in the top of the fifth, drawing a bases loaded walk to make it a 12-1 game. After a quiet fifth inning from the Pride offense, they got back to scoring, adding on two more to take a 14-1 lead. Brian Fitzpatrick led things off with an infield single followed by a Sam Benedtti double. Fitzpatrick then scored on a wild pitch and Hayden Sowers drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. The game would be called due to mercy rule in the seventh giving the Pride a 14-1 win.
