CHESTER, Pa. – Widener Baseball unable to hold on to early lead against the Elizabethtown Blue Jays.
The Pride are now 15-16 on the season and 9-6 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Mark Selverian had a stellar day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and coming around to score three times.
- Sean Burke provided the early power for the Pride, finishing 1-5 with a solo home run.
- Bobby Doherty made the most of his late-game appearance, ripping an RBI triple, driving in two runs, and crossing the plate once himself.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning, hitting three straight singles to make it 1-0. The Pride got their bats going in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs to take a commanding lead. Sean Burke led off the inning with a solo shot over the right field wall to even things up. A single from Sam Benedetti, a double from Mark Selverian, and a walk from Chris Mckenna loaded the bases with one out. Braedyn Clinton drove one in with a fielder's choice while another run scored on a throwing error to make it 3-1. Kevin Bukowski made it 4-1 with a single up the middle and Brendan Raven kept the rally going delivering a two-run single up the middle to make it 6-1. Elizabethtown cut into the lead in the top of the third, hitting a single followed by a two out triple to make it 6-2. The Blue jays continued to climb back into the game in the top of the fifth, hitting a two-run home run to make it a 6-4 game.
- The Blue Jays regained the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to make it 7-6. Those three runs came from a throwing error, a sacrifice fly, and a bases loaded walk. Elizabethtown added on to their lead in the top of the seventh, putting up five runs on two bases loaded walks, a two run double, and a wild pitch, putting the Pride in a 12-6 hole. After the Blue Jays scored three in the top of the eight, The Pride put three on the board in the bottom of the eighth after a two-run triple from Bobby Doherty and a wild pitch which Doherty scored on. Elizabethtown once again added on, scoring four more in the top of the ninth. The Pride tacked on one in the bottom of the ninth, but that is all they would get as they would lose by a final score of 19-10.
