Baseball Takes Series Against York After Sunday Split

YORK, Pa. – Widener Baseball was able to secure it's second straight conference series win with a split against the York College Spartans.

The Pride are now 9-11 on the season and 5-4 in MAC Commonwealth play.  

BY THE NUMBERS GAME 1
  • Sean Burke led the offense with a spectacular performance, going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two home runs, four RBIs, three runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base.
  • Braedyn Clinton provided crucial power, finishing 2-for-3 with a key two-run home run.
  • Brandon Yoder had a solid day, going 2-3 with two singles.
  • Kevin Bukowski also turned in a solid multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two singles.
  • Starting pitcher Alex Epperly earned the win on the mound, striking out five batters across 5.1 innings of work.
 
BY THE NUMBERS GAME 2
  • Sean Burke led the Widener offense with an efficient day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI.
  • Kevin Bukowski provided the early power for the Pride, finishing 1-for-4 with a solo home run to open the scoring.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
 
  • After a scoreless first inning for both sides, Widener struck first in the top of the second when Sean Burke launched a two-run home run to bring home JP DiGuiseppe, who had previously reached on an error. York responded in the bottom of the second inning, pushing a run across with an RBI ground out to cut the Pride's lead to 2-1. Following a quiet third inning where both pitchers settled in, Widener extended its lead in the top of the fourth when Sean Burke crushed his second two-run homer of the day, scoring Ryan Madden to make it a 4-1 game. Alex Epperly pitched out of a jam in the bottom half of the fourth, keeping the Spartans off the board and preserving the three-run cushion.
 
  • York chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring one run on an RBI single to tighten the score to 4-2. In the top of the sixth, Braedyn Clinton answered right back for the Pride by blasting a two-run home run, driving in Sean Burke, who had walked and stolen second, to give Widener a 6-2 advantage. The Spartans refused to go quietly in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to narrow the gap to 6-4. York mounted a serious threat in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. Ethan Lytle was able to work out of this jam to secure a 6-5 Widener win in game one.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
  • Widener wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning when Kevin Bukowski launched a solo home run down the left-field line, giving the Pride an early 1-0 advantage. The Spartans answered immediately in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 1-1 with an RBI double. After a scoreless second inning, York completely shifted the momentum in the bottom of the third, erupting for six runs. The Spartans capitalized on an RBI single, a pair of two-run home runs, and a run scored via a throwing error to mount a commanding 7-1 lead. Both pitching staffs settled down in the fourth inning, keeping the offenses off the board.
 
  • The Pride chipped away at the deficit in the top of the fifth inning. After Myles Calderbank singled and advanced on a throwing error, Sean Burke laced an RBI double to center field to bring him home, cutting the score to 7-2. The Spartans immediately responded in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo home run to extend their lead back to 8-2. Following a scoreless sixth inning, Widener manufactured another run in the top of the seventh; Ryan Madden drew a walk, advanced on a single by Burke, and ultimately scored when Ryan Bauerle drove a sacrifice fly to center field, making it an 8-3 game. Once again, the Spartans countered in the bottom of the seventh, bringing three runs across the plate via a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer to push their advantage to 11-3. In the bottom of the eighth, York tacked on one final insurance run with an RBI single. Widener put two runners on base in the top of the ninth thanks to walks from Sam Benedetti and Sean Burke, but the Pride couldn't push any more runs across, resulting in a 12-3 final.

The Pride will return home on Tuesday, March 31st for a match up against Rutgers Camden. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
