EWING, N.J. – Comeback attempt falls just short, as the Pride fall to the TCNJ Lions.
The Pride are now 7-10 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Brandon Yoder had an outstanding day at the plate, leading the offense by going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.
- Kevin Bukowski provided crucial power in the middle of the lineup, hitting a solo home run and driving in a total of three runs while going 2-for-5 with a run scored.
- Ryan Bauerle had a solid day, finishing 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both offenses went down quietly in the first, Widener struck first in the second to take a 1-0 lead. JP DiGuiseppe singled to center field, stole second base, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Chris McKenna then stepped up and grounded out to shortstop, bringing DiGuiseppe home for the game's first run. TCNJ responded in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1. Following a pair of walks and a hit batsman, TCNJ drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Neither offense got anything going in the fourth, but the Pride reclaimed the lead in the fifth, plating two runs to make it 3-1. Bobby Doherty drew a lead off walk and quickly stole second. After Ryan Bauerle reached on an error by the shortstop, Brandon Yoder laced an RBI single to score Doherty. During the play, Bauerle advanced to third on a throwing error. Shortly after, Kevin Bukowski reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, allowing Bauerle to cross the plate for Widener's third run.
- TCNJ's bats came alive in the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 4-3 lead. The Lions hit an RBI double down the left-field line, tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left field, and brought in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice. A quiet seventh inning led to an explosive eighth inning. Widener tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth when Kevin Bukowski launched a solo home run to left-center field. However, TCNJ answered aggressively in the bottom half with three runs of their own, hitting an RBI single and a two-run single to right-center to extend their lead to 7-4. Refusing to go quietly, Widener mounted a fierce two-out rally in the top of the ninth. After Braedyn Clinton and Ryan Bauerle reached base, Brandon Yoder loaded the bases with a single to shortstop. Kevin Bukowski then delivered a clutch two-run single through the right side, scoring Bauerle and Clinton to cut the deficit to 7-6. But the Pride's comeback bid would fall just short, losing by a final score of 7-6.
