Bukowski Homers Twice, But Baseball's Late Rally Falls Short at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Widener Baseball's comeback attempt falls short in series finale against the Messiah University Falcons.

The Pride are now 4-8 on the season and 1-2 in MAC Commonwealth play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Kevin Bukowski anchored the offense with a stellar 2-for-4 day at the plate, launching two home runs, driving in three RBIs, and crossing the plate twice.
  • Michael Kaczynski was a major run producer, going 2-for-4 with a two run home runs, a single, and a team high four RBIs.
  • Braedyn Clinton put together a solid multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride offense was kept quiet through the first four frames, while Messiah jumped out to an early and commanding lead. After a scoreless first inning, Messiah erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second. The Falcons kept their foot on the gas, adding two more runs in the bottom of the third and another pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, leaving Widener in a 10-0-hole heading into the fifth inning.

  • Messiah tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 12-0, but Widener's bats woke up in the top of the sixth. Kevin Bukowski put the Pride on the board by blasting a solo home run to right-center. Later in the inning, Michael Kaczynski came through with a two-run single through the left side, bringing home Brandon Yoder and Tyler Harper to cut the deficit to 12-3. Messiah answered with a single run in the bottom of the sixth and another in the seventh to push their advantage to 14-3.

  • Refusing to go down quietly, the Pride offense surged again in the top of the eighth. Bobby Doherty stepped up as a pinch hitter and delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Yoder. Kaczynski immediately followed by crushing a two-run home run to left field, bringing Doherty home and making it a 14-6 game.

  • Widener continued to fight in the top of the ninth, plating four more runs in a furious final rally. Bukowski launched his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left field that scored Myles Calderbank. Later in the frame, Doherty hit into an RBI fielder's choice to bring home Hayden Sowers. Finally, Braedyn Clinton showed great plate discipline to draw a bases-loaded walk, allowing JP Diguiseppe to cross the plate. Despite the explosive 10-run effort across the final four innings, the Pride's comeback attempt ultimately fell short, resulting in a 14-10 final.
