CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Softball hosted the University of Rochester for its home opener, dropping both games of the doubleheader to the Yellowjackets.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
Rochester and Widener traded scoreless innings early as both defenses held strong through the first three frames. The Pride threatened in the bottom of the first when Elizabeth Carney singled up the middle and Katelyn Tong reached on an error, but the Yellowjackets worked out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
The Yellowjackets broke through in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff single and stolen base from Ally Kim, Marie Kinchington delivered an RBI single down the right field line to plate the game's first run and give Rochester a 1-0 lead.
Rochester extended its advantage in the fifth inning, stringing together five hits to push four runs across the plate and take a 5-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets added three more runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Jensen Sminchak and an RBI double from Madi Paige to make it 8-0.
Widener recorded three hits in the contest from Carney, Tong, and Jocelin Mayorga, but Rochester held the Pride scoreless to take game one of the doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
Rochester jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning, plating four runs on five hits. RBI hits from Katelyn Wade and Jensen Sminchak helped the Yellowjackets take a quick 4-0 advantage.
Widener answered in the bottom of the second when Katelyn Tong led off with a single and later came around to score on a throwing error, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
The Yellowjackets added to their lead in the third inning with three more runs on three hits, including RBI singles from Chloe Fitzgerald, Savanna Hernandez, and Ally Kim, pushing the score to 7-1.
The Pride responded in the fourth inning. Jocelin Mayorga singled to start the frame before Brenna Quinn followed with a base hit. Widener capitalized on a Rochester error and an RBI fielder's choice from Hayden Sissons to bring home two runs and make it 7-3.
Rochester extended the lead in the seventh inning, beginning with a solo home run from Marie Kinchington and later adding two more runs to bring the score to 10-3.

The Pride travel to Grantham, Pa., on Saturday, March 14, to take on Messiah University in a doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
