OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Widener Women's Basketball pulled away with a win in a tightly contested battle against the Stevenson Mustangs.
The Pride finish the regular season with a 20-5 record (11-3 MAC Commonwealth).
BY THE NUMBERS
- Riley Stackhouse led the Pride with 13 points while also adding on 2 steals, one assist, and four rebounds.
- Liliana Metrick was a key part of the Pride's victory today, tallying 12 points, adding on 3 assists and a steal.
- Giada Palmieri provided a strong lift off the bench, scoring 12 points while also grabbing six rebounds and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mustangs took the lead after back-to-back buckets to start the game with a 5-0 lead. Lindsay Kutz and Riley Stackhouse answered back not allowing Stevenson to gain a large lead early. The Mustangs kept the momentum on their side once again taking a five-point lead. After this, the Pride offense got hot, with layups from Daniels, Palmieri and Stackhouse, they took the lead for the first time. The Mustangs would eventually tie it back up just before the end of quarter one.
- The second quarter followed a similar script with Stevenson jumping out to another lead before Widener would go on a run of their own. Liliana Metrick and Giada Palmieri were crucial in this quarter and gave the Pride the spark they needed to go into halftime with a 32-32 lead.
- After halftime, Avalynn Baer gave the Pride two early buckets in the paint, but Stevenson was never allowed Widener to build on their momentum. The Mustangs took the lead back with just over five to play in the quarter. Stevenson would go up by six in the quarter, but Stackhouse and Daniels connected on late shots to keep the Pride in striking distance.
- The Pride offense got going in the fourth, Palmieri and Kutz hit layups early to give the Pride the lead and they never looked back. Jumpers from Casiello and Daniels plus three's from Metrick and Stackhouse gave Widener some much-needed breathing room. Stevenson was not done as they brought the game within three with just seven seconds left to play. But, the Pride defense stood tall giving them a 66-63 win in the season finale.
