Volleyball Sweeps Its Way to 2-0 Day

GWYNEDD MERCY, Pa. - Women's Volleyball earned a pair of 3-0 sweeps on Saturday, defeating Gwynedd Mercy and FDU-Florham at the Gwynedd Mercy Tri-Match.

The Pride move to 4-13 on the season and remain 1-1 in conference. 

BY THE NUMBERS - GWYNEDD MERCY 

HOW IT HAPPENED –GWYNEDD MERCY 

  • Widener and Gwynedd Mercy battled to a 3-3 tie early in the opening set before the Pride took control with a seven-point run to move ahead 10-4. Widener continued to build its advantage, pushing the lead to 18-8 behind strong serving and offensive production. Gwynedd Mercy attempted to battle back late, but the Pride maintained its advantage and secured the opening set, 25-15.
  • The Griffins came out quickly in the second set, jumping ahead 3-0 before Widener worked its way back into the frame. The Pride eventually took a 9-8 lead and moved it to 11-9. Widener then went on its biggest run of the set, scoring seven straight points into an 18-10 advantage. The Pride controlled the remainder of the set and closed it out, 25-14, moving one set away from the sweep. 
  • Widener carried its momentum into the third set, opening with six consecutive points and forcing an early Gwynedd Mercy timeout. The Griffins cut the deficit to 10-5, but the Pride answered by steadily extending its lead, taking a 16-8 advantage and then pushing ahead 21-9. Gwynedd Mercy made one final push to trim the margin to 23-14, but Widener finished with the final two points to take the set 25-14 and complete the 3-0 sweep. 
BY THE NUMBERS - FDU-FLORHAM HOW IT HAPPENED - FDU-FLORHAM
  • Widener and FDU-Florham traded points early in the opening set before the Pride created some separation. After FDU-Florham tied it 6-6, Widener scored three straight points, including a kill and an ace from Airyn Zimmerman, to take a 9-6 lead. The Devils answered with two points to make it 9-8, but Widener responded by extending its advantage to 13-9. FDU-Florham continued to battle, cutting the deficit to 14-12 before Widener pushed back ahead 16-13. The Devils answered to make it 16-15, but the Pride followed with two straight points to move ahead 18-15. FDU-Florham trimmed the deficit to 18-16, but Widener continued to maintain its advantage, eventually building a 21-16 lead. The Devils cut the deficit to 21-19, but the Pride answered with three straight points to reach 24-19. FDU-Florham scored twice more, but Widener closed out the set, 25-21, to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Pride took control early in the second set, going up 3-2, before going on a eight straight point run to move ahead 11-2. FDU-Florham struggled to find an offensive rhythm as Widener continued to extend its lead, reaching 16-6 midway through the set. The Devils made a brief push late, but the Pride answered with four straight points to move from 19-11 to 23-11 before finishing the set, 25-12.
  • Widener carried its momentum into the third set, opening with eight of the first nine points to take an early 8-1 lead. FDU-Florham worked its way back into the set, cutting the deficit to 11-4 and later 15-10, but the Pride continued to maintain control. Widener pushed its advantage to 20-11 and reached match point at 24-16 before closing out the set, 25-17, completing the second sweep of the day.
