Football Suffers First Season Loss to Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md.Fred Adler puts the only Widener Football points up with a season long 42-yard field goal in a hard battle against Stevenson.
 
The 19-3 loss puts the Pride at 1-1 for regular season play and 0-1 in the MAC.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Eli Warfel would lead as quarterback with a long of 29 yards for a total of 97 yards.
  • Dalton Wickel rushed nine attempts for 26 yards and Malachi Holmes made five receptions for 66 yards.
  • The Pride defense would be led with 10 tackles, an assisted sack, and a 2.5 TFLs from Luke Shimko.
  • Alder would drill a 42-yard field goal while Brendon Yoder made 10 punts averaging 30.5 yards a punt.
  • The Pride held nine first downs, totaled 212 offensive yards, and held the Mustangs to 213 yards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride would open the first road game of the season with the ball. Warfel and the Pride would see a quick Holmes catch for 8-yards before sending the ball away with a 36-yard punt. The defense answered with a three and out for the Mustangs as Ryan Wilson and Derek Namnum made a huge third down stop. The Mustangs would score with 2:49 left in the first and shank the extra point to keep the score 6-0 which would be the score after one.
  • In the second quarter, a failed two-point conversion for the Mustangs would be stopped by a Michael Miller sack. The Pride offense began to find some momentum with a Wickel rush. A roughing the kicker penalty would give the Pride a first down and Warfel rushed a handful of times along with Kareem McCoy. Alder would nail a 41-yard field goal to make the score 12-3 with 6:30 left in the second. The Mustangs would miss a 44-yard field goal to head into halftime with the Pride down 12-3.
  • Out of the half, the Pride defense would force a three and out and answer with a short drive. Tal Stoltzfus would end the Mustangs drive late in the third as both teams went shot-for-shot at each other. The Pride would take over on their own 20. A personal foul penalty would push the Pride back before sending the ball away to the STE36. The quarter would end with the Pride down 12-3.
  • A close game heading into the final 15 minutes of play would begin with the Pride. The defense would hold as Shimko picked up a tackle and an assisted sack with Ryan Kuhl. The Mustangs would kick the ball away with 11:54 on the clock to the WID37. The Pride would lose the ball while the Mustangs recovered to chew five plugs minutes of clock. A good pass coverage from the Pride defense would force the ball to be given back with 5:04 left. The Blue and Gold's offense struggled with a three and out and the Mustangs would seal the 19-3 win with a touchdown at 1:52.

Widener returns to Hirschmann Field on Saturday, September 20 against the 1-1 (1-0 MAC) Misericordia Cougars. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the Pride walk happening at 11 a.m.
