Widener Women's Volleyball has a Tough Opening Day

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Widener Women's Volleyball fall to Westminster College and Marymount in their season debut.  

The Pride move to 0-2 on the season and 0-0 in conference play. 

BY THE NUMBERS –WESTMINSTER (MO) 

  • Liz Barnes would have a team-leading eight digs. 

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST – WESTMINSTER (MO) 

  • The Pride came out strong with an early service ace, but Westminster would strike back, going on an 8-0 run.  An attack error and an Azira Benjamin kill would end the run and put the score to 8-3. The Pride went back and forth with the Titans, with Airyn Zimmerman registering the final point for the Pride in set one with a final of 25-8. 

  • The beginning of the second again would be all the Titans, as the Pride would start down 2-7. The Pride would make a hard run back as they leveled with the Titans through impressive kills from Mira Canali and Benjamin, taking the lead to 15-13. Another big run from the Titans, this time 7-0, would see the Pride down in the set 20-15. Though Widener would fight hard down the stretch, a Titan service ace would see them take the set 25-20.  

  • Westminster would score the first two points of set three, with Widener tallying back by Ava Kramer's service ace. The teams would rally for a long while, until the Titans scored four straight to put the score at 20-12. The Pride fought hard, but a Westminster kill would finish the set and match as the Pride would lose 25-19. 

BY THE NUMBERS – MARYMOUNT (VA) 

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST – MARYMOUNT (VA) 

  • The Bernies would score the first three points of set one, but the Pride would respond, making the score 2-3. The Pride would go on to suffer a 0-8 run, leaving the Bernies with a lead of 14-4. The Pride would slowly peck away, ultimately ending on a kill by the Bernies for a score of 25-12. 

  • The teams would battle it out in the second going point for point. A Bernies 7-0 run would lead them to a score of 22-13. A kill by Marymout would seal the deal with the set ending in a score of 25-14. 

  • A kill by Kramer would put the Pride on the board first. A hard-fought first few points by both teams would even the score 6-6. A run by the Bernies would put them up 23-12. The final two points for Widener would come from Kramer ending the match with a score of 25-15 in set three.

The Pride will stay in Virginia Beach as they face Virginia Wesleyan in their final match of the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational. First serve is Saturday, August 30, at 10 a.m.
