HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONEÂ
-
The first inning proved to be decisive, as York jumped out to a fast start with four runs, capitalizing on a pair of extra-base hits and timely walks. Widener struggled early and was relieved after recording just two outs. Jocelin Mayorga entered in relief and quickly stabilized things for the Pride. Widener's offense looked for early momentum, with Elizabeth Carney drawing a walk and swiping second, and Sam McCarthy reaching base later in the game, but the Pride were unable to cash in through the first four innings. The score remained 4-0 in favor of York heading into the fifth.Â
-
Mayorga continued to keep York off the board through the middle innings, tossing 5.1 shutout frames overall and holding the Spartans in check with only three hits allowed and three strikeouts. Widener's best chance to score came in the fifth and sixth innings when McCarthy doubled and Kuester walked, but both threats were left stranded. Despite a gritty performance on both sides of the ball from Carney and Paris Balilonis, who added four assists from shortstop, Widener couldn't break through offensively. The game ended with a 4-0 loss for the Pride.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWOÂ
-
The second game opened with more promise for Widener, as Caitlyn Katchur delivered a clean first inning on just a few pitches. In the top half, the Pride put runners on base, including a single by Kaelin Kuester and a walk from Carney, but the Spartans worked out of the jam. Katchur pitched effectively through the first three innings, keeping the game scoreless while working out of traffic. Widener had runners aboard in the second and third but couldn't bring anyone home. The tight contest remained 0-0 through three full innings.Â
-
York finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs on back-to-back singles and a costly wild pitch. They added two more in the sixth to extend their lead, despite some solid defensive efforts by Sam McCarthy at first base and Balilonis at third. Offensively, McCarthy again led the Pride with two hits, including a double, and Katchur reached base twice, but Widener was unable to push a run across. The game ended with York taking the second contest by a score of 4-0, sweeping the doubleheader.Â
