Baseball Takes Two From Albright in Sunday Double Header

READING, Pa. – Widener Baseball broke out of their slump on Sunday, taking both games of the double header against the Albright College Lions.

The Pride improve to 15-16 on the season and 7-7 in the MAC Commonwealth.

BY THE NUMBERS GAME 1
  • Jack Balcer started off the series strong, going 2-3 with an RBI.
  • Kevin Bukowski went 2-2 with two singles and a walk.
  • Sean Curran was fantastic in game one, tossing 6.1 innings only allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out nine.
 
BY THE NUMBERS GAME 2
  • Kevin Bukowski stayed hot in game two, going 2-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI.
  • Jack Balcer had a solid game, going 2-5 with a single and two RBI's
  • Trae Sanders delivered on the mound, going 7.0 innings only allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
  • The Pride grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning as Myles Calderbank drew a walk with the bases loaded to drive in a run. Albright would even the score in the bottom of the second with a solo shot. The Lions then took the lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI double. Widener capitalized on Albright mistakes in the top of the fifth, scoring a run to tie the game.
  • The bats from both sides went quietly in the sixth inning before the Widener bats got going in the top of the seventh. Ryan Bauerle started it off with an RBI double to left center followed by a Jack Balcer RBI single to left field. Sean Burke then drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. After Sean Curran finished off a great outing where he tossed 6.1 innings, Caleb Horner came in to close the game out and give the Pride the 5-2 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
  • The Pride carried over their momentum from game one scoring three runs in the first inning. Kevin Bukowski got things going with an RBI double to left center followed up by a Nyles Calderbank sacrifice fly to bring in another. The Pride scored the third run of the inning on a double steal. After the offensive fireworks in the first inning, both offenses were silenced through three innings.
  • The Pride got things rolling again in the top of the fourth inning as Ryan Bauerle drew a bases loaded walk to bring in a run. Jack Balcer then drove a single to left center to bring the Widener lead to 6-0. Albright was finally able to scratch across some runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Those were the only runs Albright would get as Trae Sanders came back out to throw a scoreless seventh before Garret Moyer came in and tossed two scoreless innings to give the Pride a 6-2 win.

The Pride will finish off the series against Albright in Chester on Monday, April 14th, First pitch is set for 3:30pm.
