Baseball Endures Loss After Late Swarthmore Rally

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Widener Baseball suffers defeat after a seventh inning rally by the Swarthmore College Garnet.

The Pride fall to 2-5 on the season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • K. Bukowski had a stellar game, going 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, driving in both of Widener's runs.
  • S. Burke contributed with a double, finishing 1-for-4 at the plate.
  • J. Mello put in a strong start on the mound, pitching 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, striking out three, and keeping Swarthmore off the board.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started as a pitcher's duel, with Jake Mello keeping Swarthmore in check through three innings. Widener struck first in the third inning, as Kevin Bukowski doubled home a run, giving the Pride an early 1-0 lead. Swarthmore threatened in the fourth inning but was unable to capitalize as Jovani Hallihan came in to shut the door. The game remained tight through the fifth inning, with both teams unable to generate much offense.
  • The game turned in the bottom of the seventh inning when Swarthmore broke through with a five-run frame, capitalizing on mistakes and getting timely hits. The Pride tried to mount a comeback in the eighth, with Kevin Bukowski launching a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Despite getting runners on base, Widener couldn't close the gap in the ninth, ultimately falling to Swarthmore.
