Hot Afternoon Plays Into Tough Loss on Dixon Field Against St. Mary's (Md.)

CHESTER, Pa. – Sunny and hot Pa. afternoon for Widener Women's Lacrosse plays a factor in a physical game against St. Mary'd (Md.)
 
The 14-8 loss moves the Pride to 4-6 in the regular season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride would start on the defense but Claire Lynch caused a turnover allowing Ruggiero to snag a ground ball. Lynch would take a free-position shot that would be saved. On the other side of the field, Polacek kept the score scoreless with back-to-back shots. The Pride struck first at 7:42 with Trowbridge's free-position goal. Cox would cause a turnover and snag a ground ball to transition. Edwards tied the game at two to end the quarter.
  • The second quarter started slow for the Blue and Gold. The Seahawks would pester shots and Cox picked up two more caused turnovers. On the offensive side, Ruggerio, Jessica Mantz, and Gianna Scaliti saw shots. Edwards saw the back of the cage at 4:46 to make the score 5-3. Two cards on the Seahawks would give Lynch a man-up goal on a free-position shot at 2:34. Another free-position shot from Mingioni with 10 seconds left would give the Pride a one point deficit into half.
  • Mingioni continued her scoring with a 12:03 goal. The Seahawks found a rhythm while Edwards and Mantz kept pressure on. Kasey Thornton found her first caused turnover off a draw control that would end the scoring for the third as the Pride went into the final 15 down.
  • Trowbridge won a draw control and would immediately score a man-up goal for her 20th of the season. Polacek made a save and forced a St. Mary's timeout. Edwards won a draw control and allowed an unassisted Ruggiero goal at 9:38. The defensive pressure on the 8-meter would force a Seahawks free-position shot that fell wide. The defense kept the pressure on with more Polacek saves as the offense would go quiet. The game would end 14-8 in favor of the Seahawks.
