CHESTER, Pa. – Widener Baseball completed series sweep of the Eastern University Eagles on Saturday, taking both games of the double header.
The Pride improve to 9-6 on the season and 3-0 in the MAC Commonwealth.
BY THE NUMBERS GAME 1
- Jack Balcer had a huge day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBIs, providing a key offensive spark.
- Ryan Bauerle made his presence felt, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a walk.
- Sean Burke had a productive day, going 1-4 with a double and two RBIs.
BY THE NUMBERS GAME 2
- Jack Balcer stayed hot in game two, going 4-5 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs.
- Chris Mckenna had a solid day, going 3-4 with an RBI and a walk.
- Sean Burke showed off his power, going 1-4 with a home run.
- Kevin Bukowski played a huge role in the offense, going 1-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
- The game started with little offense from either side, both teams struggled to get runners on base and were held scoreless through the first two innings. Eastern broke through in the top of the third, scoring two runs on a double to right center. Widener answered back int the bottom of the fourth, started off by a Ryan Bauerle RBI double and then followed up by Eastern defensive Miscues to give Widener a 3-2 lead. The Eagles would tie the game at three in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly.
- Eastern would then take the lead in the top of the sixth with a four-run inning putting widener in a 7-3 hole. The Pride did not shy away from the challenge, answering back immediately in the bottom of the inning. Sean Burke would get the ball rolling with a two-run triple into deep right center field and then would score on a passed ball to bring the score within one. Jack Balcer would then come up clutch for the Pride, smashing a two-run triple into deep center field to give Widener the lead. Eastern did not go quietly, tying the game in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Ryan Madden walked up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Madden was able to work a long at bat and eventually draw a walk, giving the Pride a walk off 9-8 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
- The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the first inning after a lead off double. The Pride followed that up with an offensive explosion in the bottom of the inning. Jack Balcer would lead the inning off with a solo home run over the blue monster to even up the score. Kevin Bukowski followed that up with a two-run shot of his own over the right field wall to give Widener a 3-1 lead. Ryan Madden poked one down the right field line to add another run before Balcer came up to the plate for the second time in the inning and connected on a two run double to give Widener six runs in the frame. Eastern responded quickly, putting up three runs of their own in the top of the second to bring the score within two. The Pride kept the offense going in the bottom of the second, adding on two more runs after a passed ball and a Nick Nigro single. Eastern once again answered in the top of the third, hitting a three-run home run to bring the score within one. Widener just continued to respond, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the third after a Kevin Bukowski sacrifice fly and a passed ball. Eastern put up another run in the top of the fourth before Widener's bats were finally kept quiet in the bottom half of the inning.
- The fifth inning was the first time neither team added a run all game. The scoring would return in the top of the sixth as Eastern added their ninth run to bring the score within one. Widener added a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth after a Chris McKenna double to bring the score to 11-9. Eastern would not go away, adding their tenth run of the game in the top of the seventh. The Pride were able to take advantage of defensive miscues in the bottom of the seventh and extend their lead to three. Sean Burke would homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Pride their 14th. Hayden O'Neill would then come in and deliver two scoreless innings to give the Pride a 14-10 win.
