Baseball Ends Florida Trip with a Series Split Against Calvin University

 
LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – Widener baseball Splits double header against the Calvin University Knights after rain pushed back the games by a day.

The Pride are now 6-6 on the season.

BY THE NUMBERS GAME 1
  • Brendan Raven had a strong day at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.
  • Chris McKenna went 1-3 with a single and an RBI.
  • Hayden O'Neill gave the Pride a solid start, going 3 innings pitched, only allowing two hits, and striking out two.
BY THE NUMBER GAME 2
  • Jack Balcer had a huge impact at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and driving in three RBIs.
  • Sean Burke made key contributions, going 1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and a walk.
  • Chris McKenna provided clutch hitting, going 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a walk.
  • Caleb Horner delivered a dominant relief outing, throwing three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out six.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
  • Calvin was able to strike first in the top of the first inning after an early single. After a quick bottom of the first for the Pride, The Knights added on another run in the top of the second. The Widener offense was shut down through the first three innings of this game, they finally broke through in the fourth inning when Ryan Bauerle scored on a balk by Calvin's pitcher.
  • The Rain hit as the top of the 5th was about to get underway and pushed the remainder of this game to the next day. When the game resumed the following morning, Calvin picked up where they left off, adding another run to their lead immediately. The Pride put up a fight in the bottom of the 7th inning, scoring their second run of the game on a Chris McKenna RBI single. Widener was unable to bring home the tying run and would lose by a final score of 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
  • Just like to first game, Calvin struck first scoring the first run of the game in the opening frame. The Pride would be held scoreless in the first, but the second inning saw the Pride offense get going. Ryan Bauerle started the inning off by reaching first base on an error followed by a Sean Burke Walk. Brendan Raven would then reach on an error which led to the first run of the game for Widener. Chris McKenna laid down a beautiful bunt to bring in the second run and a passed ball would lead to the third run of the inning. The Fourth and final run of the inning came on a Jack Balcer RBI double to extend the lead to 4-1. Widener would add on to their lead some more in the third inning after four walks. Jovani Hallihan held the Knights to one run through three innings.
  • Caleb Horner came in for relief in the top of the fourth and looked locked in, striking out the first two batters before getting the final out on a weak ground ball to first base. The Pride added to their lead once again in the top of the 6th thanks to a Chris McKenna RBI single. The Pride would add on two more insurance runs in the top of the 6th with a Jack Balcer RBI double. Ethan Lytle came in to finish out the game and give Widener an 8-1 win.
 
UP NEXT
The Pride return to Chester for their first conference match up of the season against the (5-5) Eastern University Eagles on Friday, March 14th. First pitch is set for 3:00pm.
