Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Come Up Just Short of a MAC Championship against Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Women's Basketball's magical season comes to an end as they fall to #1 seed Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Championship.

The Pride finish the season 18-9 on the season and 10-4 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Lindsay Kutz would lead the Pride in points and rebounds in the game, putting up a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds shooting .500 from the field.

  • Mary McFillin was a sharpshooter, shooting .400 from the three.

  • Mia Robbins was an all-around contributor, finishing with six points and six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams started the game hot from three, as both teams would knock down multiple early in the game. Messiah would keep up the heat however, as 12 straight points would see the Pride down 5-15. Scores from Lindsay Kutz and Jayla Daniels would help narrow the margin, but the Falcons would respond to each bucket as Widener would trail 9-19 at the end of the first.

  • Widener would stumble out of the gates in to start the second quarter, as turnovers would lead to an 0-8 run before Kaitlyn Kearney's free throw would halt the advance. The Pride would find success in the post, as Ava Baer and Mia Robbins would lead a run to cut the lead to 17-31, but Messiah would go on a run of their own. The Falcons would lead the Pride 36-19 heading into halftime.

  • Defense would highlight a majority of the third quarter as both teams forced multiple turnovers to start the half. Kearney's layup and free throws from Kimberly Cassiello would put the Pride on the board for the quarter, but the Falcons would score ten straight point in response. Giada Palmieri would provide a spark for the team, knocking down shots and hitting her free throws, but Messiah would extend their lead to 59-28 after three.

  • The Pride again would suffer a run to start the quarter until McFillin's three would end it. Baer and Grace Egli would impress with their scoring down the stretch, and Kaitlin Meenan and Breelynn Leary would pick up some late points. Mia Elisano's putback layup would cap off the game, as the Pride would come up short for a conference championship, falling 46-74.
