DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Widener Women's basketball came close to erasing a 17-point fourth quarter deficit but ultimately would lose by a final score of 60-61 to Grove City.
The Pride are now 8-2 on the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Lindsay Kutz delivered another solid performance, scoring 14 points, grabbing seven rebounds, while also recording 2 steals and a block.
- Riley Stackhouse continued to be a key part to the Widener offense, scoring 14 points on 4-8 shooting and going 6-8 from the line. She also grabbed 4 steals and recorded 2 blocks.
- Avalynn Baer posted a strong all-around performance with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Widener set the tone early in the first quarter, going on an 8-2 run to open the game after a three ball from Jayla Daniels and Riley Stackhouse converting the and one. The Pride continued to be aggressive, with Stackhouse putting up eight points in the quarter and giving the Pride a 17-11 lead after one.
- Grove City came out in the second quarter and regained the momentum, tying the game with a little over six to play. They would keep the momentum throughout the quarter, going on a 18-4 run to take a 29-22 lead into the locker room.
- Avalynn Baer connected on a layup after the break, but Grove City was able to keep their momentum, going on a 19-9 run after the early Baer bucket. The Pride were able to gain some momentum back towards the end of the half with a steal by Stackhouse leading to a Breelynn Leary jumper followed by a layup by Baer. The game would hed into the final frame with Grove City leading 50-33.
- The Pride came out on fire in the final frame, with Stackhouse and Lindsay Kutz connecting on back-to-back layups followed by another Baer jumper. Kutz was crucial in this quarter scoring 11 points, bringing the Pride within striking distance after being down 17. The Pride brought the score within one but were unable to gain the lead before time expired and would lose by a final score of 61-60.
