Widener Shuts Out Neumann in Breast Cancer Awareness Game

CHESTER, Pa. - Arwen Fithian makes a diving save to keep Neumann scoreless as Widener Field Hockey wins 4-0.

The Pride improve to 7-3 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Pride recorded 18 shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Pride controlled much of the opening quarter. Widener earned the game's first penalty corner less than a minute in and maintained steady offensive pressure throughout. Despite several fouls slowing momentum on both sides, the Pride's back line stayed sharp while goalkeeper Fithian remained untested. The quarter ended scoreless, setting the stage for the Pride's offense to break through later in the game.

  • The second quarter saw the Pride continue to dictate possession, generating back-to-back penalty corners early on and testing the Knight's defense with multiple shot attempts. Despite the sustained pressure, the Knights' defense managed to hold firm, with several blocked shots keeping the Pride off the board. Neumann managed a rare look on goal, but Fithian came up with a key save to preserve the shutout as the teams went into halftime scoreless.

  • The Pride broke the game open in the third quarter with an explosive offensive surge, netting all four of its goals in the frame. After relentless pressure on the Knight's defense, Cenci finally broke through to put the Pride ahead. Moments later, Bryk doubled the lead off a penalty corner assisted by Karly Bervinchak, and Haye added two quick goals, including one off the post, to cap a dominant stretch. Fithian made a crucial save late in the quarter to maintain the shutout as the Pride took full control, leading 4-0 heading into the final period.

  • The Knights pressed hard in the final quarter, generating several penalty corners and shots, but Widener's defense stayed composed. Goalie Fithian came up clutch once again, making key saves to preserve the clean sheet. The Pride's backline held firm to secure the 4-0 shutout victory in their Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
