CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Women's Volleyball teases the upset alert before being defeated in five sets by Misericordia University.
The Pride fall to 3-4 on the season and 0-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pride exploded to start, headlined by an 8-1 run, to take a 10-5 lead. A 7-1 run later in the set would put the team up 21-11. The Cougars would go on a late run to close the lead, but three straight scores led by a kill from Abigail Herrin would give the Pride a 25-11 win.

The second set started much closer, as the Pride held a 5-4 lead. A 4-0 Cougar run would be met with a 6-1 Pride run led by Lilyanna Martucci's kill and back-to-back service aces, as the score sat at 11-9. Both teams would then go on small two- and three-point runs, but a 1-5 Cougar run would see the score at 24-22 with Widener holding the lead. An Azira Benjamin kill from Chronister Campbell would end that run however, as the Pride would take the set 25-22.

Widener struggled with errors to start the third set, as Misericordia held a 4-6 lead early. The teams would trade points as Toomey caught fire with hitting, and a 7-2 Pride run would give the team a small lead at 16-15. The Cougars would respond with a 6-1 run, though Toomey's kill would cut the lead late at 21-22 Misericordia. Unfortunately, the Cougars would score three straight as the Pride would fall 21-25.

The Pride started strong in the fourth set, starting with a resounding 9-2 lead, but the Cougars' 6-1 lead would see the score sit at 10-8. The teams would trade points again until five straight from Misericordia would be met with a 6-1 Widener run to set the score at 20-21 Misericordia. Unfortunately, a 1-4 Cougar run would see them force a fifth set as the Pride would fall 21-25.

Misericordia would be the aggressor early in the fifth set, establishing a 2-5 lead before scoring four straight to push the score to 4-9. A kill from Herrin would help the situation, but six straight Cougar points would not. The Pride would fall in five sets with a 5-15 loss.

The Pride will travel to Aston, Pa to play in the Knights Invitational, a two-day tournament held on September 13 and 14. Their first opponent will be Ursinus at 6pm.
