CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Head Field Hockey Coach Melissa McCarthy welcomes Lindsay Kraus as an assistant coach for the 2024 season.
"Widener Field Hockey is excited to welcome Lindsay to the program for the 2024 season," said McCarthy. "Her experience as an athlete and coach in competitive atmospheres, as well as her relatability to the full student-athlete experience, stood out in the interview process. Lindsay's love and passion for the game of field hockey is contagious! I am confident that with our guidance, she will make a strong impact on and off of the field. Welcome, Lindsay!"
Kraus will look to help improve on a field hockey team that finished as the runner-up in the ECAC tournament last season. The Pride were 4-3 in conference play and 5-4 at home, qualifying them for both the MAC Commonwealth and ECAC tournaments.
On the field, Kraus has demonstrated her ability to play and coach field hockey at a high level. She started her athletic career as a player and coach for the Harford Hockey Organization in 2008. She played four years of collegiate field hockey at Gettysburg College, where she also earned the NFHCA "National Academic Squad" for four years straight. In her college career, Kraus totaled 14 goals, eight assists, and 36 points. In her senior year, she shot 74% of her shots on goal and started every game.
Following her playing career, Kraus joined Episcopal Academy's field hockey staff as an assistant coach. She also was a coach for the U19 team at Spooky Nook Academy.
Currently, Kraus works as an Assistant Professor of Biology at Alvernia University. She teaches biology courses and coordinates labs for undergraduate students. She writes primary research and review articles through JOVE Methods Journals and is building a cell-based research lab for the students.
Prior to her Assistant Professor role, Kraus worked as a Lab Instructor for Ursinus College. There, she relayed advanced scientific materials into hands-on learning through laboratory lectures and experiments.
In 2018, Kraus spent time as a PhD Candidate, performing lab experiments on cells, protein quantification, and polymerase chain reaction. She also worked on small animals and assessed heart functionality using echocardiography, organ isolation, and cell-specific isolation.
Kraus began her working career as a teacher's assistant in Gettysburg College in 2018. She constructed lab experiments for students in Vertebrate Zoology. She led students on class-related trips to observe different ecosystems, animals, and plants.
Adding to an already impressive resume, Kraus earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Temple University in 2022. She also received a Certificate in Global Public Health from Temple in 2021. Kraus completed her undergraduate degree at Gettysburg College in 2018 where she earned her Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry.
