YORK, Pa. – Widener baseball won the first game of their doubleheader with the York College Spartans on Sunday 12-3. They fell in game two 11-6. The Pride picked up two conference wins in the weekend set against York, a team that is receiving votes in D3baseball.com's Top 25 poll.
The Pride are 10-14 on the season. They are 6-6 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS: GAME 1
- Alex Savkov and Jack Balcer each had three runs. Ryan Bauerle led the team with four hits and tied the team lead with two RBIs.
- Sean Curran went all seven innings on the mound. He struck out five batters and only allowed three runs in a season-high 119 pitches.
BY THE NUMBERS: GAME 2
- Christian Reed and Kevin Bukowski each had two hits. Balcer led the Pride with two RBIs.
- Widener's pitching unit utilized four pitchers. They struck out four batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST YORK
Game 1
- Despite a fielding error in the bottom of the first inning, the Pride's defense ended York's first offensive half-inning on a double play. Widener's offense found a rhythm in the top of the second with six runs. Myles Calderbank, Matt Koblos, Nick Barenz, and Balcer were all credited with RBIs. Curran would finish off the second inning with two strikeouts. Both sides would put runners on base in the third. The Pride's defense forced three straight fly-outs to end the bottom of the third. Through three, Widener led 6-0.
- The Pride brought in three more scores in the fourth. A Hayden O'Neill RBI walk and a Bauerle two-RBI single made the score 9-0. Widener and York would take turns bringing runners home in the fourth and fifth innings. A Balcer RBI double scored Savkov in the top of the fifth, putting the Pride into double digits. Widener added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a Bukowski two-run missile to left-center field. York scored in the bottom of the seventh. However, the game ended on a double play from the Pride's defense, which is exactly how Friday's game against York concluded. Widener secured the first game 12-3.
Game 2
- The Spartans had an early 2-0 in the first inning on a two-RBI single. Despite this, the Pride bounced back in the second inning with three scores. Reed hit an RBI single, and O'Neill and Reed scored on York errors. The Pride kept their slim lead until the bottom of the third, where York tied the game on a home run. They would put five more runs on the board in the fourth. Two of those came on two sac-fly situations. York had an 8-3 advantage after four.
- A Balcer RBI groundout in the fifth cut the Pride's deficit to four. But, the home team essentially put the game out of reach in the sixth. Three runs made the score 11-4. Between the eighth and ninth innings, Widener scored one run each. Brendan Raven had an RBI single, and Balcer sent a pitch over the fence in right field. The Pride, though, were retired on a fly-out. The Spartans prevented the series sweep with an 11-6 win in game three.

The Pride will be in Immaculata, Pa. on Tuesday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m. They will face the Immaculata University Mighty Macs.
