Widener Baseball Brings in Ten Runs in the Eighth to Cruise Past Rosemont Ravens

Sean Burke Had a Solid Outing

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener baseball never trailed in their Wednesday game against the Rosemont College Ravens, soaring to a 16-5 victory. The 16 runs were a season-high for the Pride.

The Pride are 13-19 in the regular season. They are 8-10 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sean Burke led the Pride with three runs and three RBIs. He tied for the team lead with two hits.
  • Eli Geackel started on the mound. In 4.1 innings, he only allowed two hits and struck out five batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ROSEMONT
  • Both pitchers were on point early, as the first inning only saw three batters on each side. After a quick top of the second, Burke scored on a wild pitch to give the Pride their first run. Geackel had five strikeouts in the first three innings and at least one per inning. In the bottom of the third, Alex Savkov singled and advanced to third on the following play, thanks to a throwing error by the pitcher. However, they were unable to score. An RBI single from Rosemont in the top of the fourth tied the game. The Pride's defense recovered on the next play. A double play, initiated by Geackel, ended the Ravens' offensive attempt. Widener answered with a Burke RBI single in the fourth that scored Jack Balcer. Balcer had been on third because of a walk and two stolen bases. JP DiGuiseppe added an RBI with bases loaded, as the Pride led 3-1 after four.
  • The Ravens scored a run in the top of the fifth before the Pride countered with two of their own. Nick Barenz put up an RBI single, and Balcer stole home on a failed defensive pickoff of Barenz. Both teams showed good pitching in the sixth. They would exchange RBI singles in the seventh, with the Pride's coming from Barenz. In the eighth, Jackson Houy earned two strikeouts to stifle the Ravens' offense. Widener's offense proceeded to detonate in the bottom of the eighth. Three consecutive walks put the Pride in scoring position. Savkov, Ryan Bauerle, Burke, Nick Nigro, Brendan Raven, DiGuiseppe, and Mike Morrow would all be credited with at least one RBI. The only non-RBI was from John Najdek, who advanced to second on a passed ball, which scored Raven. It was 16-3. Back-to-back RBI walks gave Rosemont two runs in the ninth, but Garrett Gordy finished the game on one pitch. The Pride won 16-5.
