GRANTHAM, Pa. – Widener baseball engaged in a back-and-forth battle with the Messiah University Falcons on Friday before falling 10-9. The Falcons are receiving votes in D3baseball.com's Top 25 poll.
The Pride are 13-20 on the season. They are 8-11 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sean Burke led the Pride with three hits and four RBIs. Three different players had two runs each.
- Hayden O'Neill started on the mound. In four innings, he struck out two batters and only allowed four runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MESSIAH
- The Pride put two men on base in the top of the first, despite not being able to score. A sac-fly in the bottom of the second got the Falcons on the board. Neither side made a true threat on offense in the third, but Widener got caught stealing for the third time in four innings in the top of the fourth. Messiah grew their lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including on an RBI triple. Although O'Neill struck out the final batter of the inning, the Falcons had a 4-0 lead through four.
- Despite Messiah scoring on a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, the Pride's defense countered with a double play on the next batter. Widener's offense came to life in the sixth with five runs. Ryan Bauerle singled and went to second on the throw, scoring Jon Aman. The Pride hit three straight RBI doubles, the last of which was a ground-rule double. Two plays later, Brendan Raven's RBI single made the score 6-5. This would force a Falcons' pitching change. With Widener loading the bases in the top of the seventh, Messiah changed pitchers once again. The Pride would score four runs over the next two batters. Nick Barenz turned a walk into an RBI. Then, Burke smacked a three-RBI double to make the score 9-6. Messiah scored in the bottom of the seventh, but Aman, playing right field, threw out a runner going home to stop the Falcons' offensive inning. Ethan Lytle, who came to the mound in the seventh, struck out two batters to begin the eighth. Even with this, a three-run home run put the Falcons up 10-9. The Pride's day ended on a double play in the top of the ninth. Messiah took game one of three in the weekend series 10-9.
