Widener Softball Picks Up a Win in Senior Night and Final Home Game

The Pride Split in Double Header Against Alvernia

CHESTER, Pa. - The Pride split in their final home double header as a part of Senior Night, losing game one before getting a close game two win.

The Pride move to 11-15 on the season and 5-7 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME ONE

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME TWO

  • Katelyn Tong and Alyssa Gomez would lead the team in hitting, recording 2RBIs and a home run each.

  • Samantha McCarthy's six put-outs was a team best

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE

  • The first inning came and went without a score, but a crucial Pride error in the top of the second would score two Golden Wolves as they would take a 0-2 lead. The Pride would not score in the bottom of the second, and an Alvernia single RBI in the top of the third would extend their lead. The Pride would respond strong, starting with a perfect Liv Robinson bunt to score Caitlyn Katchur. Paris Balilonis would then hit a double 2RBI to score Liv Robinson and Taylor Bell, and an Alyssa Gomez single RBI would send Balilonis home. The third inning would end with a huge Pride comeback, as they now led 4-3.

  • An Alvernia ground out in the fourth would send a runner home as they tied the lead, and the Pride would go three straight outs in their at bat. Alvernia would explode in the fifth inning, scoring four runs and taking a 4-8 lead after another empty Widener at bat. The Golden Wolves would keep it up, hitting a two-run home run to take a 4-10 lead as the Pride still couldn't find home base. Alvernia would continue to run up the score, sending three runners home and taking a 4-13 lead. Widener would get two hits in the seventh inning, but both runners would be left on base as a foul out would give the Pride a 4-13 loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO

  • The Pride would jump out early in game two, as a Gomez fly out would send Robinson home and an error would see Balilonis reach home plate. The second inning would go without a score, and the Pride would lead 2-0. In the top of the third, Alvernia would get to work, scoring three runs to take the lead. But Mikey Tong, brother of Katelyn Tong, would tell her to "hit it out of the park" and she would do just that. A missile to left center field would score her and Balilonis and regain the lead. If you're still not convinced on the Mikey magic, Alyssa Gomez would head his advice and hit a rocket to center field as the Pride would get back-to-back home runs and take a 5-3 lead.

  • Alvernia would catch up quickly, as a double would score two and tie the game at five. No team would score in the fifth, and Alvernia would leave two on base in their scoreless at bat in the top of the sixth. Sara Clymer would be the hero for the team, as her ground out would have Jalia Lawrence score as the Pride would head into the seventh with a 6-5 lead. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Katchur's pitch would turn into a pop out as the Pride would get a clutch 6-5 win.

UP NEXT
