Widener Baseball Splits with Albright Lions in Harry Miller Dedication Games

Aidan Weitzel Had a Dominating Game Two on the Mound

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener baseball won one of two games in their Saturday doubleheader against the Albright College Lions. They took game one 5-4 before falling in game two 9-8. Widener won one of three games in the weekend Albright set.

Before the doubleheader began, the Pride honored former Widener baseball head coach Harry Miller, who coached from 1965-88. Nine of Miller's former players were in attendance. Tom Miller, who is not related to Harry, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The Pride are 11-16 in the regular season. They are 7-8 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME 1 BY THE NUMBERS: GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALBRIGHT

Game 1
  • A quick top of the first led to the Pride's first offensive inning. Three straight walks loaded the bases early. Bauerle brought in the first score on a sac-fly. A Widener defensive error in the top of the second tied the game. The Pride's defense, though, made good plays in the third. Curran struck out two consecutive batters, and Widener threw out a runner trying to go from first to third base for the final out. Bauerle continued his hot start by adding an RBI single in the bottom of the third. Widener led 2-1 through three.
  • Both defenses created solid plays in the fourth inning. However, three Pride errors in the top of the fifth allowed Albright to take a 3-2 lead. RBIs from Barenz and Bukowski gave the lead back to Widener in the bottom of the inning. Both sides committed a defensive error in the sixth, but neither was able to score. Lytle came in relief of Curran in the seventh. Although the Lions scored on a passed ball, Lytle recorded two strikeouts to get the Pride a 5-4 victory.
Game 2
  • Albright's bats were red-hot to begin game two. The initial five batters got a hit to push their advantage to 4-0. Widener's defense forced a double play to end the half-inning. A Bukowski RBI triple put the first Pride run on the board. However, the Lions answered with two scores in the top of the second. Aman and Barenz knocked in runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to three. Weitzel came in to pitch in the third. The Pride retired Weitzel's first six batters across the third and fourth innings. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Pride's offense brought in the tying runs. Aman sent a missile to right field for his first collegiate home run. Barenz and Balcer would follow suit with RBIs. It was 6-6 after four.
  • Weitzel's streak of three quick outs kept up in the middle innings. He retired the first 14 batters he faced, and 16 of his first 17. An Alex Savkov RBI single in the sixth gave the Pride the lead back. Albright broke through Weitzel's strong pitching for a single in the seventh, but Weitzel struck out the last batter. Even with a Bauerle sac-fly that scored Balcer in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions regained the lead with three runs in the eighth. The Pride held the Lions to no runs in the top of the ninth, but Widener was retired in three batters. Albright won 9-8.
