Men’s Lacrosse Stays Undefeated with Road Win Over Albright

Billie makes 12 saves

READING, Pa. – Widener Men's Lacrosse downs Albright under the lights to move to 2-0 in conference play.
 
The 16-14 win puts the Pride at 3-8 in the regular season and 2-0 in the MAC Commonwealth.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Wesley Sporer led the Pride with a hat-trick on five shots.
  • Jimmy Knepp dished three assits and picked up two goals.
  • Defensively, Liam Montgomery caused three turnovers with three ground balls.
  • Keegan Billie registered a dozen saves in 50 minutes of play.
  • The Pride would see 38 shots and 37 ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride opened the game with a goal just two minutes into play from Matt Horgan. Less than a minute later Nicholas Knepp found net to make it 2-0. The scoring continued a minute later with a Matt Buckley shot to stun the Lions. A good Widener clear turned into a Sporer goal to turn the run into 4-0. At 8:41 the Lions turned the zero to one. After a quarter of play, the game turned to be a tie at four.
  • Keeping the trend alive, Colin Wingate scored his first goal of the game at the 14:24 minute mark to take the lead. A slew of shots would rattle off on both sides for five minutes before Sporer ended the drought. Sporer's goal would start a Pride run with back-to-back Blue and Gold goals from Nick Brennan and Wingate. The score was 8-5 in favor of the Pride after 23 minutes of play. A J. Knepp goal and Billie saves would end the first half with a 9-6 lead.
  • Out of half, N. Knepp followed suit with a quick Pride goal. Billie stood tall the next possession to keep the attacking Lions scoreless. Bryant Maits picked up a goal to extend the lead as Matt Ellison tacked one on the board at 8:51. Billie continued to keep the Lions out with three saves. Caiden Shaffer and Maits closed out the third quarter scoring to head into the final 15 up 14-9.
  • After three quarters of play, J. Knepp closed the trend with a 14:18 goal. Sporer closed out his day with a 7:37 goal. Sam Heister would see action in the final eight minutes of play with a handful of saves. A Pride timeout at 4:27 would help wrap the game up with a 16-14 win.

Widener returns to Hirschmann Field on Saturday, April 13 to honor their senior class. Game time against the 6-6 (2-0 MAC Commonwealth) Hood Blazers in a 1 p.m. matchup.
