Women’s Lacrosse Comes up Just Short in Comeback vs. Cabrini

The Pride Outscored the Cavaliers 7-2 in the Second Half

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener women's lacrosse almost came back from an eight-goal deficit, but they lost to the Cabrini University Cavaliers 11-9 on Friday.

The Pride are 2-4 in the regular season. Their first MAC game is on Saturday, April 6 vs. Alvernia.

BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CABRINI
  • Widener won the opening draw control. The visitors were aggressive early, scoring two goals in the first four minutes. The Pride got a few shots up and had successful clears before Scott scored the first Pride goal, which was on a man-up situation. Jessica Mantz assisted. Cabrini would answer with another goal as the clock expired for the quarter. The Cavaliers led 3-1 after one.
  • The Pride struggled with the first draw controls of the quarter. The Cavaliers cashed in on two goals. But, a Cabrini turnover turned into a Mingioni goal from Alex Krohn. Widener's defense prevented more Cabrini offensive possessions by forcing turnovers. At 3:01, however, Cabrini went on a 4-0 run to end the half. The visitors had a 9-2 advantage after one half.
  • Rosini made two saves to start the third quarter before the Cavaliers broke through the defense for a score. Widener continued to force turnovers, which led to multiple successful clears. Mingioni ripped one through the net past the midway point of the quarter to bring the deficit to 10-3. That was also the score at the end of the quarter.
  • The Pride began their comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. Three-and-a-half minutes into the quarter, the Pride put two scores in the net. Ruggiero scored from Scott, and Jamie DeHaven scored from Ruggiero. Despite a Cabrini counter on a man-down free-position goal, the home team did not shy away from their offensive attack. Widener would score four unanswered goals in the remaining seven minutes. The middle two were within 15 seconds of one another after a quick draw control. With a potential overtime period looming, a costly Widener turnover ended the comeback attempt. Cabrini won 11-9.
