DeHaven’s Hat Trick Kicks Off Spring Break with Dominating Win over Randolph Macon

Pride score season high in first quarter

ASHLAND, Va. – Widener Women's Lacrosse and Jamie DeHaven opened their spring break trip with a 9-6 win over Randolph-Macon on the road.
 
The win would move the Pride to 3-4 in the season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jamie DeHaven led with a hat trick and two assists.
  • Catherine Scott saw two goals on five shots and two caused turnovers.
  • Defensively, Kasey Thornton snagged three ground balls with a caused turnover.
  • The Pride would out shoot the Yellow Jackets 25-19 and lead with 21 ground balls to their 19.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride defense stood strong on the Yellow Jackets first offensive attempt. On a double woman-up attempt, Alex Krohn took advantage with a goal at 13:48 to put the first points on the board. Right after a Jamie DeHaven draw control, she would go down the field to snipe the back of the cage to make the score 2-0. Katelyn Rosini kept the advancing Yellow Jackets with a save to transition DeHaven into another goal scoring opportunity. DeHaven's goal forced a Yellow Jackets timeout at 9:42. The goals kept pouring on as Catherine Scott saw a women-up attempt. Halfway through the quarter, Chloe Mingioni saw another women-up goal as DeHaven added an assist. Rosini stood tall on a free position shot which led into an Alyssa Ruggiero goal to make the score 6-1 with 2:15 left.
  • A slower second quarter for the Pride opened with shots from Scott and Clark Trowbridge on the attacking side. Rosini continued to stand tall as she denied the Yellow Jackets. The first goal of the second game from a DeHaven free position shot with 8:09 on the clock. DeHaven's goal would mark a hat-trick for the game. Clark Trowbridge saw her first goal of the game with 38 seconds left in the half. The Pride would head into half with an 8-2 lead. 
  • Out of halftime, back and forth possessions ended with a Yellow Jacket's goal. Scott and the Pride answered back a minute later to make the score 9-2. Rosini's goalkeeping continued to favor the Pride as she made back-to-back saves. The penalty kill game began as the Pride found themselves with three in the penalty box at 5:19 left in the third. Scott would see the only goal of the third for the Pride. They would head into the fourth up 9-4.
  • With 15-minutes left, the Pride would head into the fourth looking to pick up their offensive game. Shots from Ruggiero and DeHaven would open the quarter but leave the attacking zone empty. Following a Yellow Jackets turnover at 9:46, the Pride would take a timeout to draw a plan. The Blue and Gold's defense stood strong after multiple attempts from the Yellow Jackets. Rosini saved another set of shots to keep the score 9-5. The Pride would hang on with a 9-6 win at Day Field.

Widener returns to the field on Wednesday, March 13 to play the 5-1 Christopher Newport Captains. Game time is set for 5 p.m. in Newport News, Va.
