Widener Softball Splits in Double Header as Their Fielding Shined at Home

Katchur's 3RBI Triple Would Give The Pride all the Momentum in Game Two

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener softball splits in their home double header against Hood, losing the first game before winning the second.

The Pride move to 6-8 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME ONE

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME TWO

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE

  • The Blazers started with a score early as an unfortunate injury led to an inside the park home run, and the Pride wouldn't put a runner on base in their first at bat. The second inning would see the Blazers go three straight outs, while the Abby Blake's single RBI would send Kate Tong home, tying the game at 1. The top of the third wouldn't go as planned, as Hood would score two runs on a ground out and RBI single. Paris Balilonis would hit a strong single, but Pride outs would leave her on base, as the third inning would close with Widener down 1-3.

  • The fourth inning would start slow as neither team would score, despite the Pride having Tong on third base; and the fifth inning would also be a scoreless one. It would be more of the same in the sixth inning, as neither team would record a hit and the Pride would go into the seventh and final inning still down 1-3. In their last at bat, Hood would hit a 1-run home run to extend their lead to 1-4. Jalia Lawrence's singe RBI would send Caitlyn Katchur home, and Alyssa Gomez would be walked to make the game 2-4 with bases loaded and two outs. A strikeout would seal the close game however, as the Pride would fall 2-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO

  • The Blazers were again able to score early, as an RBI double would give them a score, but a Balilonis single RBI would score Liv Robinson to tie the Pride up with at 1. Pride fielding would shut down the Blazers in the second inning, and a Samantha McCarthy single RBI would send Sara Clymer home, as the second inning would end with a 2-1 Pride lead. The Pride fielding would again shine with three straight outs, and at bat they'd go nuclear. McCarthy's single to center field would run in Gomez, and a booming triple by Katchur would score three, as she Abby Blake and Clymer would score. The third inning would be all Widener as they would expand their lead to 6-1.

  • In the top of the fourth, the Blazers would again be tortured by the Pride's fielding as they would record no hits. Widener's batting would continue to be on fire, as Balilonis would send a missile to left field for a 1-run homer and the Pride would take a 7-1 lead. The fifth inning was a quick one as neither team scored, only Hood getting a single, but the Blazers would hit a 1-run home run in the top of the sixth. Tong and Clymer would hit singles that would be left on base as the Pride would stay ahead in the sixth 7-2. Hood would fail to record a hit in the seventh as the game would end with a 7-2 Pride win.
