Widener Baseball Picks up Conference Win vs. Stevenson Mustangs

Alex Savkov Had Another Strong Performance

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Widener baseball secured a 10-9 road win on Sunday, as they defeated the Stevenson University Mustangs.

The Pride are 6-11 on the season. They are 2-4 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENSON
  • The Pride had one man on base in the top of the first, but the Mustangs scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning. A Ryan Bauerle RBI single, which scored Kevin Bukowski, was Widener's first run. The Pride loaded the bases, and a Savkov two-RBI double cut the deficit to 4-3. Widener halted Stevenson's offense in the second and third innings, as only three batters got to the plate in each. Savkov broke through the Mustangs' defense once again in the fourth, this time by tying the game on an RBI single. A wild pitch and a Barenz RBI single put the Pride up 6-4 and forced a Stevenson pitching change. The home team got a run back on an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. After four, Widener led 6-5.
  • Despite the Pride getting two defensive outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Mustangs scored three runs. Widener countered with three of their own in the top of the sixth. Jack Balcer and Christian Reed hit RBIs, and Barenz scored on a Stevenson error. Aidan O'Brien took the mound in the bottom of the sixth. The Pride retired the last Stevenson batter on a groundout, even with bases loaded. Neither side made a serious threat to score in the seventh, but a Bukowski sac-fly in the eighth brought Barenz home again. Widener made a solid defensive play in the eighth. Although Stevenson's Kaige Garrity hit an RBI double, the Pride got him out while he was heading for third. Ethan Lytle, who came in for O'Brien, saw three straight outs in the bottom of the ninth. Widener won 10-9.
