Widener Softball Splits in Final Day of Florida Matchups

The Pride Take Care of Lesley Before Errors Bring Them Down Against Emerson

NAPLES, Fla. - Widener softball splits in their final games in Florida as they take down Lesley before falling to Emerson. 

The Pride move to 3-3 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play. 

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME ONE 

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME TWO 

  • Jalia Lawrence would have the lone run of the game as Balilonis would pick up the RBI. 

  • Liv Robinson would lead the team with two hits. 

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST LESLEY 

  • Jalia Lawrence got things moving for the Pride immediately, getting on first base from a walk and stealing second. Liv Robinson's selfless bunt turned into a ground out but moved Lawrence to third, and a Paris Balilonis RBI single sent Lawrence home. Balilonis advanced to second, but two strikeouts later the Pride would finish at bat already with a 1-0 lead. Lesley would respond with two scores on singles that advanced home to close the first with Widener down 1-2. The second inning would see Samantha McHugh's single be left on base as three outs followed, and a Lesley double was also left on base as an out preceded it and two straight outs followed. Moving to the top of the third, Lawrence is again walked and steals second. An Alyssa Gomez single RBI would advance her all the way to third off a Lynx error and take Lawrence home to tie the game, and Gomez would score on an errant throw to take the lead. Three straight Lynx strikeouts would finsh the third inning with the Pride up 3-2. 

  • The fourth inning started slow as both teams got three outs in a row and the score stayed the same. In the top of the fifth, Sam McCarthy would be walked but caught stealing, and two outs would follow. The Lynx would also have a quick inning as they would go three straight outs. The sixth inning is where things would heat up. Balilonis would get a single, and Amanda Danz's single would put runners on first and second. McHugh's single RBI would advance her to second on the throw, Danz to third, and score Taylor Bell who pinch ran for Balilonis. Abby Blake's double would send McHugh and Danz home as the Pride would score three runs in the inning. The Lynx would score a run on a single RBI as the Pride would lead 6-3. Now at the top of the seventh, Lawrence again is walked and steals second as she does so well. She would advance to third on an error. Balilonis would reach first on a fielder's choice, sending Lawrence home in the process. A Gomez double RBI would send Balilonis home as the Pride would finish the top of the seventh up 8-3. Lesley would fail to score any runs in their final attempt as the Pride would get the 8-3 win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EMERSON 

  • Emerson would bat in the top of the first inning, and three errors would turn two singles into two runs. In the bottom of the first, Jalia Lawrence and Liv Robinson's singles would put runners on first and second. Paris Balilonis' ground out would have Lawrence score as Robinson would advance to third, but two more outs would leave her on base as the first would end with the Pride down 1-2. In the top of the second, the Lions would start with two singles that would find their way home on groundouts as they would lead 1-4 now. The Pride would go three straight outs in the bottom of the second to keep them trailing 1-4. The top of the third would start with two straight outs for the Lions, until their third and fourth batters are walked. A pop up out would leave both on base, as the Lions would have their first inning without scoring. Liv Robinson and Paris Balilonis' singles would put runner on first and third with two outs, but a pop up out would leave them both on base as the third would close with a 1-4 score. 

  • The fourth inning see both teams go three straight outs as the score would go unchanged. In the top of the fifth, the Lions would leave a single on base as sharp Pride fielding would pick up three outs. Widener's Kate Tong would reach first with an out on the board, but a double play would finish the fifth with the score still at 1-4. The sixth and seventh innings would be three straight outs for both teams as the game would finish with a 1-4 Pride loss.

The Pride will return to Chester as they will play their home opener against a conference opponent in Eastern. First pitch is Saturday, March 16 at 1pm.
