Widener Baseball Splits with Farmingdale State to Start Florida Schedule

The Pride Put up 11 Runs for the Day

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Widener baseball earned a split against the Farmingdale State Rams on Saturday. They lost game one 7-5, but they bounced back in game two 6-4.

The Pride are 2-4 in the regular season. Their first MAC game is on Friday, March 15 vs. Eastern.

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME 1 BY THE NUMBERS: GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST FARMINGDALE STATE

Game 1
  • The Rams jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning with a grand slam and an RBI single. The Pride made up a run in the bottom of the first on a double play, where Kevin Bukowski scored. Aidan Johnson and O'Brien both saw time on the mound in the second inning. Farmingdale State would bump their lead to five runs on a groundout RBI. O'Brien halted the Rams' offense in the third with three strikeouts in five batters. But, the Pride's bats could not capitalize in the bottom of the third. Farmingdale State led 6-1 through three.
  • A quick fourth inning led to Farmingdale State scoring in the fifth. Both sides were relatively quiet until the bottom of the sixth. Even though the Pride loaded the bases, the Rams retired the final batter. Down by six, Widener began their comeback attempt in the seventh. Savkov hit a two-RBI double to bring in JP DiGuiseppe and Aman. Two batters after, Barenz brought Savkov home with an RBI single. With two men on base later, Christian Reed hit an RBI single to bring the score to 7-5. However, a fly-out ended the game. Farmingdale State took game one.
Game 2
  • The first inning was a shootout. Widener loaded the bases and scored on a hit-by-pitch, walk, and a wild pitch. The Rams answered with three RBI singles. The Pride would get men on base in the second and third innings, but Farmingdale State did not budge. Widener's defense held up in the second and third innings, not allowing more than three batters to the plate. The score was 3-3 after three.
  • Both teams left men on base in the fourth inning before the Pride broke through in the fifth. Calderbank began the scoring on an RBI single. Mike Morrow followed that up with an RBI on a groundout before Calderbank came home on a balk a few batters later. The Rams cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, as Ethan Lytle took over on the mound. Down by two, the Rams had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. However, Lytle got the save, and Widener won 6-4.

The Pride continue their RussMatt schedule with a game against the Keystone College Giants tomorrow, Sunday, March 10. Game time is at 9 a.m.
