Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Loss of New Season vs. Swarthmore

The Pride Saw a Balanced Scoring Attack

CHESTER, Pa. – Despite multiple comeback attempts by Widener women's lacrosse on Saturday, they fell to the Swarthmore College Garnet 8-7.

The Pride are 1-1 in the regular season. Their first MAC game is on Saturday, April 6 vs. Alvernia.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Catherine Scott had a hat trick (three goals) for three points. She also led with five of six shots being on goal.
  • Alyssa Ruggiero scored two goals and had a team-high five ground balls.
  • Katelyn Rosini made 12 saves in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SWARTHMORE
  • The Garnet got up some shots early on, but Rosini made sure none went in. Scott scored the opening goal of the game on an Alex Krohn assist. Both defenses were causing turnovers in the middle of the quarter, and both teams saw successful clears. With two minutes left, Swarthmore cashed in on their first goal. After one, the score was knotted at 1-1.
  • Both goalies made a save in the initial three minutes of the second quarter. However, after a Pride yellow card, the Garnet scored a man-up goal. They would follow that with two more to lead 4-1. Despite not getting up any shots during that Swarthmore scoring stretch, Widener countered with a Krohn goal on a free-position shot. Neither team saw a shot attempt in the last two minutes, and the Garnet led 4-2 at the half.
  • Within the initial three-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter, the Pride were aggressive. Alyssa Ruggiero scored an unassisted goal followed by a Scott goal from Chloe Mingioni. A minute later, the visitors went back on top after a high shot moments earlier. It would be one of two Garnet scores in the quarter. Rosini made more saves, but Swarthmore had a two-goal advantage. It was a 6-4 game through three.
  • Even with a Swarthmore turnover in the opening minutes of the fourth, the Garnet added a goal at 10:53. However, the momentum shifted in the second half of the quarter. In the span of a minute, Scott and Ruggiero cashed in to cut the deficit to one, forcing a Swarthmore timeout. Even though the Pride won the draw control, a costly turnover led to a goal from the visitors. A Jamie DeHaven goal at 1:08 would lead the Pride to come up just short, as the final score was 8-7.
