Hostetter’s TD Helps Extend Football Win Streak to Three

Hostetter snags five catches; Walker's sack train continues

MADISON, N.J. – Widener Football strikes first in an upset win over FDU-Florham on Saturday afternoon to extend their win streak.
 
The 10-7 win moves the Pride over .500 to a 5-4 record and a 5-3 MAC record.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Isaac Hostetter's 48 yard pass would lead him over the air for a total of 88 yards.
  • Quarterback Jeff Chaplin led with offense with 213 passing yards, a new season high.
  • Ryan Pattison's last play field goal would seal the deal while also adding in a PAT.
  • Defensively, Luke Shimko would see a season high 10 tackles while teammate Jalen Walker would have three sacks and add in a tackle for loss.
  • The Pride had 365 total offensive yards, 278 being over the air.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride would open the game after a Devils coin toss deferral. A short offensive series resulted in a Jack Wisniewski 40-yard punt. A strong defensive start and long Devils series would chew almost seven minutes off the clock that resulted in a turnover on downs after a gamble. Nate Brown and Kyle Jones would force a sack to give the ball back to the Blue and Gold. The first quarter ended scoreless.
  • Walker's sack to force a 3rd and 18 would force a punt. Widener's drive would being at 6:38 at their own 10. A long offensive streak had key plays from Malachi Holmes and Jordan Baxter. Out of the two-minute timeout, Chaplin aired a short ball to Hostetter to allow him to take it to the house for put the first points on the board. FDU-Florham drove the field under two minutes, but Walker came up big again with another sack. As time expired a missed 47-yard field goal by the Devils would keep the Pride on top heading into halftime.
  • Out of half, the Devils answered with a touchdown of their own to tie the game at seven. A six minute series for the Pride would come up empty handed as the offense was knocking on the door at the FDU9. The quarter would end with a Luke Shaeffer tackle to head into the fourth tied.
  • With 15 minutes left to play, the Devils were knocking on the door as well until Alexander Cintron responded with an interception in the endzone to give the ball back to the Pride with 12:17 on the clock. Offensive gains from Dalton Wickel on the ground moved the Pride into plus territory. A 39-yard field goal attempt to take the lead would unfortunately be blocked with 4:47 remaining in the game. A huge defensive stop would force an 11-yard punt with under two minutes left. The final drive of the game would be the deciding factor in the Pride's win streak extending. A 55-yard drive would see huge plays from Kareem McCoy, Jordan Baxter, and Hostetter. Pattison came up clutch with a 31-yard chip shot with 13 seconds left. A last play hope would result in favor of the Pride as they took a 10-7 win, extending the win streak to three.

Widener returns to Hirschmann Field on Saturday, Nov. 16 for senior day and the annual Keystone Cup. Kickoff against the 7-2 (6-2 MAC) Delaware Valley Aggies is set for 1 p.m.
