COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – In the season opener,
Matt Daulerio and Widener Men's Basketball open with a five-point differential against Ursinus.
The 90-85 loss will put the Pride at 0-1 to start the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Daulerio led with 28 total points and had eight rebounds in 28 minutes of play.
- Defensively, graduate student Kevin Schenk had two steals and a block along with 16 points.
- The Pride would shoot 46.5% from the floor and 30.8% from three with 40 points in the paint.
- The Blue and Gold capitalized on 19 Bears' turnovers with 32 points off turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schenk and company quick got to work with a steal and a Daulerio layup to get on the board first. Daulerio would add in his first block of the game seconds later. At the 17:02 mark, Daulerio drained a triple from Myles Bright to make the score 7-4. The Pride would go on a 6-0 run to push the lead to 10 as Luke Mazur, Ethan Dodson, and Steve Hamilton tallied points. With just under seven in the half, a Mazur triple would swing the score to the Blue and Gold. Back-to-back triples from Schenk and Bright helped extend the lead heading into half. The final two minutes of play became a point fest with a jumper from Schenk, another Mazur triple, Daulerio jumper, and Bright layup. The Pride headed into half with a 48-44 lead.
- Out of half, Mazur began the scoring for the Pride with a good jumper two minutes in. Two Bright steals would turn into Pride points on fast breaks to push the lead to three with 16:25 remaining. Daulerio would dunk the ball to push the team points to 56. At the 11:57 minute mark, Daulerio tied the game at 60. Crucial turnovers for the Pride offense would hurt the momentum as the Bears would go on a 13-3 run in the middle portion of the half. Schenk would pull a trip to the charity stripe to sink three while Mazur hit a triple to help bring the score in grips. With 2:40 on the clock, the Pride were down eight. Dodson would bring the game to a five point deficit with 12 seconds left while Schenk had a steal and a fast break layup to bring it closer. The Pride would runout of time and fall 90-85 in a high scoring season opener.
