Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Handles Business in the Griffin's Nest

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - Women's Volleyball overcomes a slow start to get a 3-1 win on the road over the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy.

The Pride improve 13-6 and remain 1-1 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Toomey's 7.0 total blocks would be a big help in the Pride's win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Pride started in a 1-4 hole, but a 4-0 run would have the Pride retake the lead at 5-4. The team would trade points, until Widener would go on an explosive 6-0 run as the score would sit at 14-11. The Griffins would respond with a 6-0 run to take a 14-17 lead, and the tams would battle down the stretch. Unfortunately, a Gwynedd Mercy kill would sink the Pride 20-25.

  • Shannon Toomey's two blocks and a kill would help the Pride score five straight to take a 5-1 lead early. The Giffins' four straight scores would tie the game at 6, but a 7-1 run would see the Pride lead 13-7. A strong Gwynedd Mercy run would cut the lead to a one score game, but another Widener run would see them up 18-13. An Azira Benjamin kill from Megan Prior would end the set as Widener would get a 25-21 win.

  • Toomey would set the tone again in the third set, as her kill would spark an 8-1 start. Another Pride run of 6-1 would see them up 16-9, and the teams would trade two point runs down the stretch. Three straight Gwynedd Mercy scores would cut the lead to 20-19, but the Pride would score five in a row to end the set. With another Benjamin kill from Prior, Widener would win 25-19.

  • Like clockwork, Toomey's two kills would aid the Pride in taking an early 5-1 lead. The teams would trade points until five Griffin scores in a row would tie the game at 10. The teams again would trade two point runs down the stretch, and the score would be tied at 19 late. A 4-1 run would see the Pride go up 23-20, and a Lilyanna Martucci kill from Prior would seal the game with a 25-22 win.
