Gloomy Day in Maryland Gives Pride Hard Time In First Loss of the Season

Jacob Kopelman led Pride defense with 16 tackles

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A rescheduled game against the Stevenson Mustangs on rainy Saturday afternoon gives the Pride their first loss of the season.

The 49-7 loss puts the Pride at 3-1 in the season and 2-1 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pride saw their 277 total offensive yards with 68 plays.
  • Chase Diehl aired out 11 completed passes for 140 yards.
  • Jordan Baxter led the receivers with 83 yards as Isaac Hostetter had 43 and the only Pride touchdown.
  • Jacob Kopelman saw a new season high with 16 tackles, an interception, and a tackle for loss.
  • AJ Celona had a busy day punting as he kicked away nine times for 312 yards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride opened the game following a Mustang deferral but had a quick 4-play 22-yard drive. For the first time this season, the Pride failed to score on first as the Mustangs struck with a 10-play 75-yard drive. The remainder of the first became a battle on the wet field as both teams punted on their next drives.
  • As the first quarter closed, Kopelman snagged his first interception on an overthrown pass to set the Pride up at the STE47. The Blue and Gold's favorite Diehl-Hostetter combo gave the Pride their tying touchdown on a 33-yard pass as the second quarter opened. Heading into half the Pride trailed by six.
  • Heading out of halftime the Pride defense stood strong. Both sides of the ball saw four drives ended in punts, two on downs, and a fumble. The only points came on a 27-yard pass for the Mustangs.
  • With rain falling in Owings Mills, the Pride offense struggled with only 50 yards of total offense. Kopelman and Thomas Nigro added numerous tackles as they tried to hold the Mustangs out.
UP NEXT
Widener and the MAC see a bye week on Sep. 30. The Pride will host the 3-1 Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Hirschmann Field.
