CHESTER, Pa. – Head Field Hockey Coach
Melissa McCarthy announced Widener's 2023 schedule which includes nine home games on Dixon Field. The Pride are looking to continue their success after their 10-8 (5-3 MAC Commonwealth) season last fall.
Among the returning is fifth year
Margaret Howe-Consiglio and Honorable Mention MAC All-Conference Goalie Lily Rejrat. The Pride will also welcome three transfers and nine first years to the team.
"Fall 2023 is primed to be another exciting season for the Pride" said Coach McCarthy. "Our schedule has a different look this season with two new competitors (University of Mary Washington and Washington College). It also boasts the non-conference return of DeSales, the winners of the MAC Freedom last year, and Arcadia, the Runner-Up. We are welcoming three transfers - two with NCAA tournament experience, the return of
Margaret Howe-Consiglio for her fifth year, and nine first years to the roster. The experience and depth of our bench will be our greatest asset this season and we cannot wait to make more history on Edith R. Dixon Field."
The Pride begins their season with two strong opponents on the road at MAC Freedom Champion Delaware Valley. A new opponent for the Pride surfaces two days later as they face off against the University of Mary Washington.
McCarthy and company come back to Chester for their first home game on Edith R. Dixon Field against Cabrini for the final time in school history on September 7. Following a home game, the Pride are back on the road to another new face on the schedule Washington College. The September schedule wraps up with a home game against DeSales.
McCarthy is excited to "make a run at a fourth MAC Commonwealth Tournament berth." October will begin the stretch of MAC Commonwealth play on the road October 7 at Hood. "Being on the road will help our team bond quickly and train us for important MAC Commonwealth contest" said McCarthy. "With only four teams making the postseason this year, it is important to come prepared, mentally and physically, for every single team." The Pride look to travel to Albright and come home with an upset after last year's Commonwealth Quarterfinal game. A challenging conference schedule displays two close games on the 14th against the Commonwealth Champion Messiah on Dixon Field and on the 21st against the Commonwealth Runner-Up York. The Pride conclude the regular season with two final home contests and look for its fourth consecutive MAC Commonwealth Tournament berth.
The MAC Commonwealth Conference Tournament will begin on November 1 with a semifinal game and will conclude on Saturday November 4 with the championship.
