CHESTER, Pa. – By beating the York College Spartans 7-4 on Tuesday, the Pride clinched the #3 seed in the conference.
The Pride are 21-18 in the regular season. They are 15-9 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST YORK
Aaron Nuble had two runs.
Anthony Boccio collected three hits in five at-bats.
Hayden O'Neill allowed five hits and three runs in 6.1 innings of work.
The Pride were the first team to pounce, as an
Andrew Yates RBI single scored one run in the bottom of the first. Although neither side saw much success in the second inning, Widener added another run in the third. A
Kyle Brex sac-fly put the home team ahead by two runs. However, a groundout retired the Pride on the final out. Widener led 2-0 after three.
Although the Spartans had a runner on first base due to a Widener error in the top of the fourth, the Pride recorded three consecutive outs to deny a run scored. In the bottom of the fourth, Widener got a big boost on offense. Nuble sent a three-run missile to left-center field to make the score 5-0. York, though, answered in the fifth. An RBI groundout and an RBI single cut their deficit to three runs. Despite Widener having two men on base in the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans ended the inning on a fly-out. To end the sixth inning, York caught Boccio stealing. The Pride were up 5-2 through six.
The seventh and eighth innings saw each team bring in one run per inning. A Widener error and a sac-fly scored the York runs for each inning. Meanwhile, the Pride scored by way of an RBI double and an RBI on an error. Looking for answers in the top of the ninth, the Spartans went down in three batters to retire the game. The final score was Widener 7-4. This win not only gave the Pride the series win over York, but they avoided dropping to the fifth seed due to their tiebreaker with Messiah.
